Amazing First Week in the Books!

The Schaab Scholars had an amazing first week of school!  We participated  in lots of community building exercises, all trying to set up our classroom learning community.  Thank you so much to the parents who were able to join me for curriculum night.   I appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedules to come meet me.  For those of you who weren't able to make it, take a look around our blog and let me know if you have any questions!

We have been using Class Dojo to encourage positive behavior.  All parents should have received an email invitation to create a parent account for your child.  If for some reason you did not receive the invite, let me know. We are so close to hitting our class goal of 250 Dojo points, so hopefully you will see your child's login coming home soon.

As I mentioned on parent night, we have just begun our Daily 5 and CAFE adventure! This is the reading and writing program implemented in our classroom.

Daily 5 is the structure we will use to plan our morning. Children will be busy completing meaningful literacy tasks. The choices will be:
  • Read to self
  • Work on writing
  • Word Work
  • Listen to reading
  • Read to Someone

Schaab Scholars are engaged in "Reading to Self".

Right now, we are focusing on increasing our stamina to work independently during Read to Self.  We learned a new strategy, IPICK, to help us pick "just right" books, especially for Reading to Self.   Ask your reader what we talked about using all different shoes!

Within the next few months, the other choices will be introduced. While the students are completing their literacy tasks, I will be meeting with small groups and conferencing with individual students.  Daily 5 is how we schedule our language block. CAFE is what we study during this time. CAFE is an acronym for the four major components of reading. They are:
  • C for Comprehension
  • A for Accuracy
  • F for Fluency
  • E for Expanding Vocabulary
The Schaab Scholars will learn reading strategies within each category. These strategies will become tools for the students to use to help themselves become better readers and writers. I will keep you informed when new strategies are introduced to the whole class through our blog and your child's individual strategies via Feedback Fridays.

In Math this week we started our place value chapter.   We will be exploring Place Value and learning to compare, order, and round numbers through millions over the next few weeks.  We will also be launching the Math Daily 3, which after introducing each of the meaningful tasks, students will be taking place daily in:

  • Math By Myself
  • Math in Writing
  • Math with Someone
I believe that this structure will help with having our math block at the end of the day and ensure active student participation.  We also started the pretests for Study Island to unlock the various resources available for students to practice their skills.  All Scholars have their log in information.

If your child wants to practice their math vocabulary, here is a link to a Chapter 1 Vocabulary practice on Quizlet:  https://quizlet.com/_1gr760

The Schaab Scholars will also be continuing our study of Growth Mindset

What is Growth Mindset?
  • We used to think that our intelligence was fixed, meaning we were either smart or we weren't.  Scientists have proven again and again that simply that isn't true.  Our brain acts like a muscle - the more we use it, the stronger (and smarter) our brain becomes.
Is your Mindset Fixed?
  • A person with a fixed mindset may do these things:
    • avoid challenges
    • give up easily
    • ignore feedback
    • is threatened by other people's successes
    • try hard to appear as smart or capable as possible
What does a Growth Mindset Look Like?
  • A person with a growth mindset may do these things:
    • embrace challenges
    • give their best effort
    • learn from feedback
    • become inspired by other people's successes
    • believe their intelligence can change if they work hard.

I hope your child enjoyed his/her first week of school as much as I did!   I'm excited for our upcoming first full week!    We will be MAP testing on Tuesday and Friday of this week.  Please refer to our Class Calendar for exact times.

Have a wonderful week!
