Wow! We have been so busy in Room 217! I apologize that I haven't updated the blog- we've been so busy doing lots of learning on top of conferences, halloween, institute day, etc! My new plan is to update the blog weekly on Tuesday- so consider that my newest SMART Goal. I know that the Schaab Scholars love seeing pictures from what we're doing and I'm hoping families do too!
In Math, we've been doing lots of hands on activities in addition to lots of working problems on whiteboards to work on these learning targets to help us understand Numbers and Operations in Base Ten:
- I can decide if my answers make sense and are reasonable using mental math and are reasonable
- I can multiply up to four digit numbers by one digit numbers
- I can use strategies based on place value and the properties of operations to solve multiplication problems.
- I can illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
Global Read Aloud has become one of the Schaab Scholars favorite part of the day. We love sharing Linda Mullaly Hunt's story of Allie and her struggles of learning and fitting in. We are wrapping up Fish in a Tree this week and excited about the connections we've made with other fourth graders. It's been a very positive experience, and are excited to watch the author finish up the book for us on Friday, and even answer our own questions! We have also been participating in the Global Read Aloud with our book buddies. Check out some of the awesomeness we've have reading different books by Amy Krouse Rosenthal.
Halloween was a huge success! Below are some pictures from Halloween 2015 in Room 217. We LOVED having such a fun parade and party put on by our room moms. Thanks to Mrs. Lorenc & Mrs. Zitis for all of their fun games at the party. Check out some of the creative costumes below!!!
Lastly, we've been discussing as a classroom community ways that we can make sure that we have a positive, working environment where all students can learn without distractions. We've done quite a bit of team building, sharing stories, and building stronger connections with each other. We are starting to switch partners around, and getting to know people outside of our comfort zone. We also talked about what it means to be a Schaab Scholar. One scholar had an amazing idea of having a logo to represent our class, and perhaps, they could wear it as a badge. After a submissions were made, and silent voting took place with stickers, a winner was chosen. Check out our new logo that we are all super excited about!
Lastly, a HUGE thank you to all parents and students who came in for student led conferences. I really enjoyed checking in with everyone and connecting with students and parents in a small setting. I'm looking forward to spring conferences where students will be showcasing what they know and what they are proud of!
Have a wonderful week & I look forward to sharing more with you next week!
